CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: Holland March
• Character Age: mid to late 30s
• Character Canon: The Nice Guys
• Canon Point: Post-film

• Character History: Here.

• Character Personality:

— Quick thinking creativity: As much as March complains about how his job is needlessly repetitive and as much as he insists that the simplest answer is usually the right one, March is an incredible problem solver when things get odd. Whether or not the problem is actually solved is up in the air, but he still to think outside the box and listens to his intuition as to how to do it--he's the one who realized the note Amelia left wasn't an flight but instead a building, even if it wound up being the wrong one at first. He's quick to save his daughter by pretending he's drunk to buy them time and once he finally has all of the pieces he's able to put together Amelia had a copy of the second film and where she was going to show it. He's got no qualms with plans shifting and moving, and is actually able to keep up fairly quickly despite all of his other shortcomings. March is smarter than he looks even if he himself often doesn't realize it and a lot of stems from the unique positions he usually finds him in and his ability to somehow get out of them.
— Resilient/persistent: At the start of the film he has no follow through--and a lot of that is still true--but when push comes to shove he really proves he's reliable, even if it's in a very off-beat way. He'll pinkie promise his daughter to save the day and do just that, even if he clearly would rather take her and get to safety. A private investigator suffers many long stakeouts, and he knows when to wait before squeezing a few dollars from the old ladies he cons. He'll jump into the nearest car to try save his daughter even if he's inebriated and he winds up crashing, he'll harass his partner until he gives up his backstory despite passing out in the middle of it--March absolutely will not stop once he's got something he actually needs or wants to do, the trick is he needs to feel like he has to do it. From trying to pick up every pretty woman he lays eyes on to fully fireman carrying one of his daughter's friends out of gunfire, he'll do it. He'll just probably complain the whole time. This extends physically: he also goes through an insane amount of physical pain through the film and almost always manages to escape, prompting him to cheerily inform his partner that he thinks he's invincible and simply cannot die due to sheer, dogged persistence.
— Charismatic: People should hate March--and some do--but March has an uncanny ability to worm his way into people's hearts. It's what he mainly uses when he's conning old ladies out of paychecks, trying to convince people to give him information, or interviewing the seedy bottom feeders or annoying kids of LA. He can use his charm to actively manipulate people if he needs to and absolutely will if you're a pretty lady, but he's by no means a chess master a la Moriarty, nor is he a master manipulator: he's just quick with a laugh or a joke and has a pathetic sleaze to him that naturally sets others' expectations low. This is mostly because despite his weaselly qualities he usually has good intentions: he wears a surprising amount of his heart on his sleeve, and it can be quite an endearing quality that he doesn't try to hide that a lot of people pick up on. He's never interested in pulling a fast one on others (milking simply solved cases on to get a little more money aside), he just wants whatever information that can be provided be it a tip or a phone number and happens to be very good at cheering people up when he puts his mind to it.

— Self-Absorbed: March blames himself for his wife's death, and that grief has exacerbated a lot of his negative qualities, festering and making them worse. He's capable of feeling guilt (arguably he feels too much of it), but by and large he acts insanely self-preoccupied and egotistical as a result of things, pivoting hard into 'well there's no one to look out for now but me and I've given up' school of thought despite having an 11 year old daughter. He's more interested in money then charity, doesn't seem too put out by many moral quandaries--it's his partner that usually has to point those out--and he nearly completely forgets his own daughter's birthday. He'll offer to solve a newly revealed murder, for example, but only for a discounted price. His ability to self rationalize why is absolutely off the charts.
— Irresponsible: This ties in a bit with the other qualities, but March can be insanely irresponsible. He won't put his daughter Holly in active danger (in fact he tries to keep her out of the action as much as possible) but he's still very much inconsiderate towards her. It's strongly implied Holly is the one that cooks/cleans does literally everything around their house and March never really does much save provide the paycheck. It's the same way with women: if there is a gorgeous girl around his age, March becomes utterly pliable and will stop at nothing to spend more time with them. Like his booze problem, his irresponsibility often interrupts investigations, as he's chasing after girls instead of actually questioning anyone, hitting on porn stars at parties and falling down a hill just to impress them or, at worse, he's flat out refusing to believe a self confessed killer with a gun pointed at him just because she's insanely attractive, even going out of his way to make excuses for her.
— Functioning Alcoholic: This is the big one. Unable to fully cope with his wife's death and fully blaming himself for it due to his inability to smell the furnace leak in their house, March immediately turned to alcohol to numb himself. He's fully aware it gets in the way of himself and it doesn't seem bother him whatsoever on the surface: his very first scene he wakes up fully clothed in the bathtub and extremely hungover, a shell of the man he once was. He's unable to let her go, even wearing his wedding band as a necklace. March will take any drink offered to him without a single moment of hesitation and he will not even blink at the prospect of getting as drunk as possible as fast as possible, whether or not he's on the job. He'll derail everything as a result of this self sabotage and he may still occasionally stumble across the right clues but for the most part. He's absolutely useless when shitfaced. He'll botch up any and all questioning, lose his gun and not realize he's found the exact girl he's working to locate all in the span of half an hour.
